New Product Ideas

One of the things that I love about my job is coming up with great new ideas for products, and new ways to use our existing software, but by adding software and hardware. If you are now reading this hoping to find out about our plans, you will be somewhat disappointed. I am more wanting to write about the process of coming up with new ideas. New ideas is what separates Redshift Wireless from everyone else.

The way that I come up with new ideas is insightful. I read a lot. There are a lot of web pages and blogs that I read on a daily basis, and from those pages I keep up to date. I then look and see how I can link what I have read to what I am working on. When I am out, I am also always looking out for new ideas too, and wondering how I could provide a competitive advantage by upgrading the project.

A simple example is with the Redshift Climate Extreme Edition product, and the HDMI output. This allows you to display a web page on a screen using our hardware. Quite simple really. This morning I was reading about new design aesthetics in Apple, and this reminded me of the issues apple had with the design of the clock on iOS 6. And then it struck me… I could add a digital clock to the display options. In fact, I would use it here as I do not wear a watch and rely on my cellphone or a clock for the time. Having a smart clock would be a real bonus.

It is bringing these links together that I come up with ideas. Trying to solve problems for either myself, or for a customer that I actually do not have yet.
