Reducing Air Conditioner Running Costs
Let’s be realistic. Electricity has never been free. Initially, it was sold as a service, and then electricity meters were introduced so that people would be charged for what they used. Well, actually, a facility charge, and a charge for what they used. And whilst people may not like the idea of a facility charge, it does make the system fairer for everyone, with some of the fixed cost of providing electricity actually billed as a fixed cost.
However the price of electricity around the world has been increasing due to a number of factors. These include rising fuel costs, lack of past investment, aging infrastructure and higher embedded loads. One of the high embedded loads that is becoming more and more popular is the Air Conditioner. And Air Conditioners have a reasonably high running cost.
It must be said that since Air Conditioners are Heat Pumps, they are actually reasonably efficient at moving energy. They are commonly about 250% efficient, meaning that they heat or cool an area with a thermal impact about 2.5 times the energy used. Still, a 2.5 kW Air Conditioner consumes a lot of energy.
